Introduction to Deep Membrane Stacks

Definition and Structure
A depth membrane stack is a filtration unit composed of multiple layers of membrane materials with different functions. These membrane materials have different pore sizes and properties, typically including microfiltration membranes and ultrafiltration membranes, forming a multi-layered, depth filtration structure. For example, it may include a layer of coarser pore-size pre-filtration membrane to intercept larger particles, followed by several layers of progressively smaller pore-size filtration membranes to remove finer impurities.
Working Principle
It employs the principle of graded filtration. The fluid first passes through the outermost membrane, where larger particles are intercepted. As the fluid enters deeper layers of the membrane, smaller particles are removed by subsequent membrane layers. This depth filtration method effectively removes impurities of various particle sizes, and due to the synergistic effect between different membrane layers, it can handle more complex fluid systems. For example, when processing a mixture containing organic matter, inorganic matter, and microorganisms, the depth membrane stack can remove these different types of impurities through different membrane layers.
Application Scenarios
In industrial wastewater treatment, depth membrane stacks can treat wastewater containing various pollutants, such as dyeing wastewater, first removing the large dye molecules, then removing small particulate impurities such as metal ions. In the downstream processing of biopharmaceuticals, it is used to process complex solutions containing various biomolecules, such as separating and purifying proteins from fermentation broth, removing cell debris and impurity proteins through different membrane layers to improve product purity.
